My Thoughts

I think the main reason behind the post was to show people (and myself) that you can use colour in a more striking way. Far too often I only use colour on certain elements and for things such as links etc. But as you can see from this collection you can get away with using a lot of colour, as long that you give your colour scheme some real thought.

Great idea for a collection, Liam. I especially like #14 Refresh The Triangle and #31 Grafikas, and I never thought I would pick that peachy-orange colour as a standout. Maybe it’s because there are so many dark background sites around, and the two I’ve mentioned look really fresh to my eyes.

Great List, one of my favorite is Dale Harris’s Design. You made your screenshot with a camera?

  • Ploc Media said:

    Wow, thanks for the inclusion!

Also a great way of displaying the website screenshots, nice to see some effort put in :)

  • Rick said:

Fantastic list very inspiring. I love the OKB site, it just “feels” nice to look at.

  • liam said:

@David, Good stuff! Me too! Really going to try hard and use more colour from now on.

@John, Thanks once again for the comments.

@Suffian, Yeah definitely, the web is a lot prettier place than ever before.

@Shanna, Thanks for the comment, your website is actually another great example, very nice.

@Angie, Good to hear, I think it’s something that’s hard to get spot on, when you use so much colour, but I for one am definately going to be experimenting a little more with using lore colour.

@Fath - The Ploc Media is one of my faves I really love that ocean blue on the black background! Thanks for the comment.

@Tracey, Yeah I’d never imagine any of these colours looking well when there is a lot of them, but they really do work. It is worth pointing out that there are a lot of sites using too much colour and not quite getting it right, these were the best examples I found.

@Thomas, Hi, Thanks for the comment, I actually made the screenshots in Photoshop but it’s made to slightly imitate the look of being shot on a camera. If I had a decent camera I’d probably just use that :)

@Ploc, No worries, as mentioned just a few moments ago this was one of my favourites so thank you for being a part of it and taking the time to comment.

@Rick, Definitely has a great feel to it, a great use of light too! Thanks.

Cool list of sites. Some of these I haven’t seen before.

Interesting that you posted this, as my current site was done to try get away from the ‘usual’ bland type of sites that are found on the net.

With clever use of power, we as designers will be able to make the web a much happier place.

I wonder if this is the start of the next trend in design.

It seems like these designs are all about anti-earthtone grunge, anti-wicked worn. Lots of them are embracing web 2.0… but the color choice reminds me of what you see coming out of japan/europe.

Maybe it’s not just fashion that travels west :D

@Liz, Interesting thoughts, but I’m not sure if this will be the next big thing. A lot of these examples have been around for a while, but who knows. At the same time I think a lot of these are quite different in their styles, but I’d certainly have no problems with seeing more sites with some more amazing uses of colour (like your own) :) Thanks

@Adelle Yeah completely, I’m actually going to be reffering to this for inspiration on a new project any moment!

@divya My pleasure really like the sharp vibrant use of colours on your site, really makes it stand out, nice work!

@Andrew Yeah, I think individually a lot of these have been featured in so many site about good blogs, but I think as a collection it feels very fresh and different so I appreciate the support, thanks!

  • Erika said:

To be honest, the only one that doesn’t seem to fit is #6, because it just doesn’t seem as risky as the other. The confetti-style almost demands color, so it’s hard to go wrong. Lovely design, though!

    Great round up. :)

  • liam said:

@Erika thanks for the comment. I think its a little different because there is so much colour on one page, and having that much colour on one page can sometimes be too much, but in these cases (and with #6) the colours have been pulled off perfectly.

However your opinion is just as valid as mine so I appreciate your thoughts, thank you.

Its amazing what talented designers can do with any colour pallet. Some amazing looks have been achieved in this list.

When our design team was describing to me the direction they wanted to take our website I was more than a little concerend that they had lost their minds.

“Yeah, its going to have like a…greeny/blue header with dark green areas on pale blue background. Oh yeah and blue, pink, green and orange logos and spot colours” urgh!

Turns out it works quite well (in my opinion). Designers 1 - Me 0
