50 Stunning Examples of a great redesign: My Top Picks

A run down of a collection of my favourite redesigns in recent years

A redesign can be worth its weight in gold if you get it right. There is a thin line between freshening up your design, and taking a step backwards with a redesign.  Sometimes a redesign can be subtle and simple, and other times it can be a huge re-vamp of a company and it’s goals. Here’s a look at some of my favourite re-designs in no particular order.

01. AT&T Inc.

This is an ideal example of how a subtle upgrade can make a huge difference.

Great Redesigns | Function Design Blog

02. BP Garage

A completely different direction and modern feel. A huge improvement!

Great Redesigns | Function Design Blog

03. Sprint

Looking at the old sprint logo it’s obvious a re-design was needed.

Great Redesigns | Function Design Blog | Sprint Logo

04.  Mindshare

A great find via Brand New. Great use of colours & typography.

Great Redesigns | Function Design Blog | Mindshare Logo

05. Mustang 2010

The current 2009 Logo, compared to 2010. Subtle improvements, but wow so much more aggression! Source: AutoBlog.

Not one of the obvious choices, but I love the softer approach.

Great Redesigns | Function Design Blog | Johnsons Baby

10. Fiat Bravo

Yeah that’s right, a car made it into the list. A great example of a successful redesign, and Fiat’s recent sales figures prove it. Plus I drive this car, so a very biased choice!

Great Redesigns | Function Design Blog | Fiat Bravo

11. Steinlager

I hate lager, but if you presented me with this… It’d be rude to say no.

Sources of Information

Below is some of the sites and blogs I used for research on this post, along the way I found some great resources and inspirations.

Brand New

Without doubt a lot of these have already been covered by Brand New, a wonderful project by UnderConsideration which I urge you all to add to your RSS feed and start to follow. The content really is amazing, and if you love the logo’s I’ve featured above you’ll love it for sure.

Logo Design Love

As I’ve already mentioned there is a fantastic post on Logo Design Love which you might also find interesting “10 Sucessful Logo redesigns“. The logo design Love website is well worth checking out for various posts on Logos and Brands on a regular basis.

Identity Works

Another great resource which documents the process of various redesigns and their goals from 1998 onwards was Identity Works. A really great site to explore and find out about the history of the brand identities.

Further Reading

After all of these great examples of a successful redesign you may be feeling in the mood to give your website, blog or logo etc a redesign. But it is important you think carefully before rushing into a redesign, this wonderful article by Steven Snell looks over 21 Factors to Consider Before a Redesign and really does give some sensible advice and tips for anyone looking to freshen up their design.

Not a criticism of your article this, but more a criticism of the businesses you mentioned above. They ALL look the same now!

Too many modern sans serif fonts with crappy motifs added in as an afterthought. Gone are the days of truly unique designs…

For the record, the new “Steinlager” you have isnt a redesign, its a completely new product. Steinlager Pure is a no preservative/additive beer that is very popular here in New Zealand, usually sold alongside the cheaper standard Steinlager.

Nice post. I am fascinated how advertising reflects the attitude of the time. Take the car ads for instance. From a more quiet and flat picture… one that allows the text to talk the idea… changed to one more brutish, powerful, angry, in your face… the photo speaks.

  • Xsjado said:

Not keen on a lot of the new ones. Far to much use of gradients. HP is the best example. They started with a simple and recognisable logo, but the new one is bland and generic with a metallic texture? That’s pretty much the opposite of good logo design practice. I haven’t seen it before though and its not on their website so I question its provenance.

The BT logo does look more “modern” but I preferred the old one. A change in colour scheme may have helped but other than that I can’t see anything wrong with it. The new one just screams “designed by committee”

  • Captain Critical said:

One comment. Anyone can glean the internet and compare branding changes over time… everything evolves, and its not hard to track. What would have been nice to see would have been you offering an opinion on why you chose these particular re-designs, and why they were important to you. In other words, have an opinion. Otherwise, you’re nothing more than a five year old with a pair of scissors and a bottle of Elmer’s Glue. The only logo you passed any sort of direct judgement on was for Toys R Us, and you commented on the much more playful typeface. Come on, you mention over and over that you approve of subtlety, but the only changes are pantone values and some over exagerated lines… which could be the result of nothing more than a bad scan and trace.

  • liam said:

@Captain Critical - That’s fair enough, but I don’t think I ever claimed that that was the intention of the post. It was more to give people ideas and get people talking, sharing which ones they liked and disliked.

Perhaps you could have focused all your anger on sharing with us which ones you liked and disliked.

Anyway, your opinion. And your entitled to it, however much I disagree with you.

  • Octopus said:

Certainly, the lamest of them all is DirectTV. It will date quickly. Some would even say the design is web 2.0!

  • liam said:

@Octopus Usually I might agree, but considering it is for a TV company, I think it really works. And is probably one of the few occasions where the styling is actually appropriate in my opinion. It reminds me of a modern TV just looking at it!

  • Senshi said:

Maybe I’m in the minority but personally I find that in almost every single case the new design is uglier than the original.

  • annakhai said:

argh.. i don’t agree with half of these redesigns.. drop the drop shadow effect, keep it simple and above all - reduce the amount of colours! crappy 3d-redesigns are the plauge of the new design millennia. and btw i’ve had it up to here ^ with helvetica.

  • Jason Young said:

I agree with most of them except I vehemently oppose the new Wal-Mart logo. It looks like a $9 logo you would get off a website template site. It is so generic and pointless that I think they would do well to go back to their old logo until they come up with some that that is actually creative.

Nice comparisons, but your taste in logos and logotypes leaves quite a bit to be desired. Case in point: the exquisite Paul Rand logo for AT&T against that new abomination, the sad and weak new hp, cnet’s milquetoast redo with absolutely no voice what-so-ever, the no-change DirectTV, etc. You probably even like the new UPS logo.

Yes, you’re correct with Fuel, BusinessWeek, and the awesome new Adobe packaging. But many of the above choices tell me you should go back to programming.

I think my favourite is the Holiday Inn logo, but then maybe I’m a traditionalist. Macmillan - what’s up with that? The old logo was a bit conservative, admittedly, but the new one -ugh, looks like an advert for a kids’ nursery, and the ‘WE ARE …’ and all in capitals I find aggressive and exclusive. The ‘new’ BT and Amazon identities are hardly new, and personally I think they’re due for another revamp.

Thanks for this - very thought provoking!

My original post (above) got a bit interrupted, posting when I hadn’t planned to do so and then I was unable to access the blog in time to edit.

I started my comment with: The att, Sprint and Walmart redesigns are among my LEAST favorite identity redesigns.

In an interview with Fortune Magazine, and in my book “Identity Crisis!: 50 Redesigns That Transformed Stale Identities into Successful Brands” I made the following comment in regards to the att identity redesign:

“The AT&T rebranding, necessitated by the corporation’s association with SBC Communications, is probably my least favorite corporate makeover. A classic, easily recognizable logo has been been altered to look like a marble croquet ball, and the lowercase type of “at&t” looks juvenile. Rather than making the corporate seem more friendly to the world, this design has dumbed down a well-respected graphic image.”

In the same publications, I stated: “My initial impression of the this design (Sprint) was “Why is the name so far away from the icon?” In instances where I’ve seen the logo making use of the icon stacked above the name, the identity seems stronger.”

Wal*Mart becoming Walmart * is not impressive at all. On a recent Inside Digital Design radio show I was asked if this was an example of the “dumbing down” of yet another corporate identity. I do think it is. So many companies are just slapping an icon up against some lowercase (or upper/lower case) text to identify their business is a somewhat generic manner. In this case, slapping a golden sphincter-like element up next to the text doesn’t help at all.

Many of the other examples above are fairly good showcases for successful redesigns.

What a fantastic list of amazing examples, they are all truly amazing redesigns and so clean and simplistic. Macmillan for me isnt really a great redesign though, if the colour of the tagline was different maybe then it might work but its not the best looking and its very risky too using that style.
Talking about cars the new Holden looks totally outstanding, they typically design aggressively with each model but this new one follows the same concept but adds a touch of luxury to it.

    Great post mate!

@Rishi - Yeah, I think there’s a lot of mixed reactions, as there is with any re-design. But I certainly love it.

@Jeff Fisher You make some great points and have some really valid reasons, but for me all of the above redesigns are just a lot better on the eye. Maybe because living in the UK I don’t get to see as much of these logos as most people here, but on first Impressions (and each time I see these redesigns) I still think that each one is a lot better than its original.

Maybe, on it’s own - Not all of the new designs are that amazing, but I think especially when you see old and new side by side, you see the logo/design in a new light. For me, these all look lovely, but they look even better when compared to their older version.

But I’m sure everyone has their own reasons to love or hate these re-designs and it’s been great seeing so many different reactions. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Changes in logos are extremely interesting, because of their density of ideas (so much thinking on so little surface). But your comments are just completely subjective. Someone else could disagree on everyone of them. We need to go beyond taste. What about readability? What about sensitivity to resolution and scaling? What about color and lineart fragility when printed / faxed / photocopied / photographed?

im so sick of design. designers act like everything has to be so fucking perfect and they look down on all things with so called “bad design”. this bad design is a million times more interesting than the same old fads that get spread around. everything has to look crisp and clean. there is no beauty in perfection. it’s in the imperfections, and weird ass bad design with hilariously stupid fonts. i love comic sans and papyrus. they make me so happy. like it’s not their appearance that matters, it’s what they’re presenting.
anyways, i know anyone who reads this will think im crazy, but i am serious. i used to get caught up in it and look down on “bad design”, and everything in my life had to be perfect. then i just stopped, and realized that it really didnt matter in the end. i felt so refreshed and not stressed out. so, not to sound cheesy or anything, but “it’s whats on the inside that counts”.
    haha. long ass rant.

  • liam said:

@daniele - Valid points for sure, but I really didn’t want to over-analyze them as it might put people off from sharing their own opinions. That’s why I decided to go with the angle of choosing re-designs that I found interesting, and opening up the discussion.

@Nick - I kept them all consistent from old to new, left to right. I thought that labeling them all might have got in the way a little, an as they all go from left to right it might annoy quite a few people. Hope that helps.

@Ian - Not really sure what your comment is in reference to, is it the post? Or a comment you’ve read? Let me know and I’ll gladly post a reply.

Really great stuff. Some were very simple changes. Some were drastic. But almost all were great.

I noticed the tendency to move away from cluttered, blurry or otherwise confusing logos towards those that are very clean with just a small amount of craziness. For example, Microsoft, Vicks and BBC took logos that were pretty unpleasing to the eye and made them very very simple and elegant, while still holding onto originality.

seems like SOME of the old logos look better than the newer ones, just some. I like how they went from all capitals too lowercase. makes it look more friendly. and it seems a lot of them broke down the contraints, like the shapes, and just let the logo and font hang loose. it seems fresh and clean. So mostly, either they went to Web 2.0 glossy futuristic look or a cleaner fresh friendly look.

Nice post man, I just have to say a few words about At&T and HP, they shouldn’t be in that list, specially HP that new logo makes me sad… the old one is way better, it stands out in it’s on way, a good solid brand. The new one is glossy like every new logo that comes out, it’s boring and unimaginative. It also pisses me off how the suggestion of 3D, which is way more elegant, is not enough for people anymore, they need to see it 3D, with realistic highlights and shades… even though they are a bitch to print, that last part was about AT&T, the old logo is not perfect I’ll give you that, but this is surely not the right answer.

  • Ricardo said:

also…… that new lower case “a” in AT&T….thats probably one of the most horrid a’s I’ve seen in my life, it would, maybe, look better in a different context… who knows, given the circumstances it could even look like a good “a”, but here…. nah

Great redesigns. But I think some of the redesigned logos aren’t better than the older versions, because they lost their simplicity.

I sort of went through a nostalgia looking at some of the old logos. The msnbc looks a lot better, it’s funny how simple changes can be drastic.

Not all of the rebranding attempts you have collected here are successful. Some changes I particularly didn’t like, e.g. CNET.

You should have mentioned recent Xerox and MasterCard rebranding.

    Virgin media is God awful.

Honestly. You should have done the top 10 of successful redesign. Because many of your examples seem meaningless and some actually show no improvement at all. Take Direct TV. Ugly as hell - the new and the old one. And the car examples - please! Also pointing out the MacBook as a successful redesign - shure it is successful redesign. But have MacBooks ever been bad design?

That new AT&T logo is painful. Poor Saul! The genius of the classic logo was that it very simply and directly expressed 3D form. So they take that art and wrap it around a 3D, transparent globe thing? It makes no sense and will be quickly dated. I’d say only about 50% of these are really “wins.”

  • Design said:

99% of these are bad bad bad redesigns.

Gradients and dropshadows are not upgrades.

  • liam said:

@Design. Hmm, I only see one drop shadow and that’s on the Firefox logo. As for gradients, there’s probably only 10 with gradients in use. Not sure how you get 99% from that. I think some people just love to hate.

The ones that go have gradients use them so well and so very subtly. The Envato logo for example, the gradient is so soft that it only hints at a 3D effect, it doesn’t scream GRADIENT in your face does it?

Most of the ones with Gradients no doubt are also used without gradients, the Grooveshark logo for example I’ve seen without any gradients, just the shape. The HP logo I’ve also seen in use without the gradient, Ford don’t always use a gradient finish, the gradients are just optional finishes. Why do so many people get so offended by gradients anyway, they can be used amazingly as I think a lot of the above examples are.

I don’t love gradients, but I can recognize when they are used well.

    Thanks for your comment.
