We have Built some cool custom features into this stylish and Free Theme

We’ve been working hard on a few things lately, and this latest theme is one that we’ve made just for you guys! We’ve been working with Smashing Magazine for a while, and we’re happy to finally be able to release the theme. We’ve worked hard on making something that had the clean and sleek style that you’d expect, but we’ve put some extra focus on extending the capabilities of WordPress and it’s standard features, giving you a few extra features to improve the user’s browsing experience.

The Neat New Features

jQuery Latest Image Showcase

All of the latest posts are automatically added to the top of the homepage in a neat and interactive showcase of recent posts. A thumbnail is automatically created, and when you scroll over the image the title appears, it’s a cool little way to encourage your visitors to explore and enjoy your posts.

Related Posts Drop Down

To further encourage exploration on your blog, we’ve included a cool little drop down, which you can use by simply clicking the category name with a + next to them on the homepage. Clicking the name will bring a drop down, revealing some posts from that category.

Latest Posts & Featured Posts

We’ve built in some custom widgets that you can control from the WordPress admin panel to easily change the settings for the latest and features posts in the sidebar. We’ve also made them look beautiful, even if we do say so ourselves.

    Sure does. Just looks as if Liam hasn’t enabled it in the Demo Admin Panel. It fully supports Threaded comments and comment pagination though. :)

    @Kris - Strange, works fine on my Mac. It could be an issue with the WordPress version, you need to update to the latest version. That should work.

    Nope, doesn’t work.. I’ve been running the latest version of wordpress, and upgraded again hoping it was simply a faulty file. Still nothing. NONE of the jquery gallery pics, nor sidebar pics, load at all.. and leave me with blank image placeholders.
    Not supposed to be happening this way.

    @Kris - Make sure you go into Edit post, and define the URL of the image you want to show up in the Thumbnail. You should see a box to enter the URL in the options when you Edit / Create a post.

    Also you need to make sure that you enable the Magazeen widgets in the Widget area, don’t use plugin’s for featured news or recent posts.

    I left this comment on Smashing too. Make sure in your theme’s directory, the folder called “cache” has writable CHMOD permissions (777).

    I’m using the theme at my site mobileroyale.co.cc, and I’ve done all the tips that you’ve suggested above ( CHMODDING, adding Widgets, including the image URL in posts ). But I still can’t get the images to show up.
    Any idea why ?

    It looks like your other plugins are interfering with the jQuery required for the dock and drop down. You may need to edit the functions.js in the /js/ folder. Check out this article.

    Great theme, I am in the middle of customising it for a new project.

    I am having the same problem as a couple of other people it seems, e.g. the images not displaying.

    I wget’d the newest WP version, and did a fresh install for the Magazeen theme. No extra plugin’s have been added. It’s a stock install. I’ve activated all the widgets and they are displaying fine.

    I have uploaded my image and added the URL to the designated box and saved as instructed (at which point it has created the custom field ‘image_value’ with the URL value.

    The image displays fine when inserting via the normal add image in the WYISWYG editor. I have also tried adding with the WYSIWYG turned off to no avail.

    Thanks for the great theme though :)

    I found the solution.

    You need to CHMOD the magazeen cache directory to 777 to allow the timthumb to create the thumbnails, then it will display fine.

    Hello, it’s been a little hard, but I’m almost making this theme work. I still have a bug (i think that’s what it is). When I post an article, this article appears complete in the home page, and not just a part of it (like to use the “Continue Reading” feature).
    What can I do to make it work?
    Also, Wordpress seems to be duplicating the pictures I upload with my posts. The main pictures appears in the header of the article but it also appears a below, what can i do to prevent this?

    LOVE it!! It took me a while to get everything customized so it would have a pink color scheme instead of blue and even though I missed a few minor details, I am loving how it turned out!!

    Just a few requests in case you ever upgrade this one…

    I’d love to have room to put a “subscribe by email” box in the nav menu next to the RSS. (I tried it and it kept getting bumped down and ending up underneath the mun so I just took it all out and moved my RSS stuff into a widget.)

    Images in posts…I’d like to have the option to remove the image from the top of the post. I prefer having my images at various locations in my posts (left aligned, right aligned, etc) rather than just the one image at the top and centered.

    Smaller font sizes for the “# of comments” on the main page and for the widget headings in the sidebar.

    Widget-ready footer. My categories made my footer huge and I couldn’t figure out how to replace the list of categories with the Meta/admin stuff instead.

    Ability to post images in footer. I tried including a photo of myself in the “About this Blog” but it kept putting extra quotes around it and if I took the quotes out, I had no way to left-align the photo.

    This definitely deserves to be a premium theme, especially if you added a few extra color schemes.

    @Dileep K Sharma - The Dropdown does’t show on the Thumbnai lshowcase, it shows when you click the category name on the homepage posts. If you look at the demo, and click “+ Showcase Designs” You could see the drop-down.

    Your URLs look correct. Make sure your host allows you to set the persmissions of the folder. Often times even if you manually change the permissions, your host will change them back.

    Hello again! I’m writing now to ask you something that has nothing to do with the template per se. As I told you before, I’m traslating the theme to Spanish, well, in fact I think I’m done now. But I can’t set the date/time to Spanish and using a format used in Spanish (for example, I want the posts date to appear like “Miércoles, 25 de Febrero de 2009″) I already set WPLANG to es-MX in the wp-config file and uploaded the es-MX.mo to the languages folder which is inside the wp-content folder. Did I do something wrong or am I missing something? Or is there something else I should do? I already read everything about it en wordpress.org but couldn’t find anything understandable.

    You should just be able to right click on the folder, and click “Change Permissions” or something of that sort. Then just set them to 777. What FTP program are you using?

    Hi spencer, Im using dreamweaver, and I already changed the permissions of the wp-content\themes\magazeen\cache folder to 777 but…nothing. Im trying in 2 computers, one online witha godaddy server and one running ina local php server…but nothing.

    Its weird because it seems Im having the same problem with another theme (Vikiworks Infinity)

    Is my first day using wordpress and i´ve been more than 5h trying to set up Magazeen theme…but I cant!

    If you are having the problem with mulitple themes, it’s possible that your host does not allow you to CHMOD folders.

    Are thumbnails in the /cache/ folder?

    i figured out how to set it up correctly and nearly everything is working fine except jquery. it seems to have problems with the plugin i use for displaying pictures (Lightview Plus 2.1).

    Yep got it sorted (almost) - I deleted the Cache folder, created a new one and set the permissions for Cache to 777, and then after uploading the image I copy and pasted the ‘full’ url path into the Main Image blank box for a post.

    Only thing is it’s working for some pictures and not others, so I’m not quite there yet, but progress! Hope this works for you!

    Thanx for the info Mat. But this didn’t work form me. It’s very weird, it creates thumbs in the cache folder, it creates thumbs in the uploads folder. When I go directly to the URL it shows the pictures, but for some reason it won’t show pictures on the site. I don’t know what to do any more, it’s definetly jquery problem, ’cause the drop down menus don’t work either. Everything works perfectly on my local server. I’ll try to play with it for one more day, and if it doesn’t work then, I’m switching to my old theme. Anyway, thanks for the reply Mat.

    I think I got it to work, although I will I didn’t need to keep images height to 246 pix…I’d like to show picture in it’s original size. Is there any way we can use a plugin like lightbox to bring up the picture when you click on it???

    @Everyone with thumbnail problems.

    It is possible that (although I’ve never had a problem) the timthumb script does not recognize the MIME type of the file. Based on what Mat said, since it is a hit and miss, that is what I’d put my money on.

    Make sure you have the latest version of GD and PHP on your server.

    @Ivan

    It can’t be a jQuery problem. The script would still be displaying images with jQuery disabled. It’s a PHP or PHP related problem in the script, or on your server.

    You are probably right Spencer. I contacted my service provider for the server to see what he will say about it. I thought it was the jQuery because my drop down menus don’t work either.

    @Jay - I’m going to do this myself actually when I get round to it, try editing the header part of the template and creating a new div e.g. #site-logo or something like that, you could then give it the width and height and assign your image as the background URL.

    If you wrapped this div around the H1 tag that contains the site name you could also set a text-indent of -9999px to keep your text available to non CSS devices.

    What @Mat said should work in both cases. :) However, if you want to physically remove the coment count, you’ll have to edit some of the theme’s files.

    Hi all - LOVE THIS THEME!!! Can’t get the ‘Check out the latest…’ text in the dock to work properly though and I have no idea where to start to correct it, or what specifically I would need to do to the jquery file? All the text in that area just gets placed over the previous text (a mess LOL). Any help would be great.

    Same problem as others with the Featured News widget - it defaults to the first category regardless of which one I choose, and sometimes won’t pull any stories, sometimes it will….I’ve found if I set it at ‘10′ posts it sticks, but the category still defaults to the first alphabetic category.

    LATER UPDATE: I deactivated some plugins (a few I wasn’t using, such as eShop and ThemeTest) and now it isn’t swapping text at all….just stays static as ‘Check out the latest…’ (Which is better than the mashed up text I suppose!)

    @Spencer: I have chosen a category for Featured News and it is called as FEATURED. I’ve taken a snapshot and it can be seen at http://freeworld27.com/featured.jpg . As you will see in the picture that featured news is not displaying correctly. There is no php error but it is a design display problem.

    I used other widgets like Recent Posts, Poll and Tags and they are working perfectly. Presently you can see these widgets are displaying perfectly at freeworld27.com.

    To enlarge the text of the ‘check out Latest…’ , Nav to the Dock section of the style.css and change the font size for “.latest” which is set at 1.15em

    For the color, Nav to the comment-count 3/4 of the way down the page of the style.css and change the background color which is set at “#f23183″

    I’m just getting my head around WP themes but one way I locate the variables I want to change is to simple do a find in the browser and start searching for what it is I want to edit. For instance I knew I wanted to change the background of the comment counter so I searched for “comment” and found “comment-count”. The style.css is well documented which makes it easy to navigate.

    How I did it was this: in the style.css do a find and search for the term ‘comment-count’

    Navigate down to you see this code:
    .comment-count {
    margin:0; padding:0;
    width:auto; height:auto;
    background:#f23183;
    position:absolute; display:block;
    top:-10px; left:-10px;
    }

    #f23183 is the hot pink. Change it to whatever colour you want (yes a hex value)
    Now search again for comment-count and in the Typography you’ll find this:

    .comment-count a:hover {
    background:#ea2f7e;

    #ea2f7e is the hover pink. Change it to what you want.

    When I’m unsure of the hex value, I use this site…
    http://tinyurl.com/d6panl
    just copy the hex value in and it will give you the colour.

    I have changed all of the “pink” colors to something more masculine. I had no problems finding everything in the CSS, except for the specific one you are talking about. I have found the comment-count am able to change the hover color but not the original pink color. Any ideas?

    My only suggestion would be to open the style.css then CRTL-f to open the find and copy/paste the whole block of code in my earlier post into the find window. It will take you right it.

    So I have finaly made may images show. It seems that my server and timthumb.php don’t work well together. My problem was that timthumb generated thumbs, and the links to the images worked, it just didn’t show the images for some reason. My Server is running PHP 5.something and GD 2.0.34 and it still didn’t work.

    I solved the problem by deleting timthumb altogether and used smart image resizer instead. Now the theme has the same functionality as with timthumb . It also uses the image_value custom field. If any one needs a detailed solution it will be posted on my blog in a couple of days. I will translate it into english.

    I think that’s it. I’ve been playing around with the theme all day today trying to get these two aspects working and I am gonna give up soon :( If the jquery doesn’t work, how do I modify the code for the category to remove all the fancy drop down and just have it link to the category? (Last resort)

    While translating it in French for my purposes, I noticed a small inconsistency, though: while hovering on the “submit comment” button, the cursor stays as an arrow and this may disorient some visitors.

    If you want to change this, I’d suggest to add 

    cursor:pointer;

    to .submit-comment in your style.css file (around line 335, I think).

    And in order for your backgroudn to be able to repeat, you can’t set a fixed width. If you do, then it will only repeat for that width; in your case, you only had it repeating for 1px

    I had the same problem of the image thumbnails not showing on the magazeen theme, and here’s what i did to fix it:

    Create a /cache directory in the root of the theme folder, and set write perms to IUSR & Network Service (i’m running on Windows 2003/IIS 6)

    View the themes homepage rendered source html, and you will see one of the image tags source parameter makes a call out to a plugin called timthumb with the following code:

    img src=”[siteurl]/wp-content/themes/magazeen/timthumb.php?src=[siteurl]/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/mypicture.jpg&w=521&h=246&zc=1″

    If i call that directly in a browser i can see the error message:

    GD Library Error: imagecreatetruecolor does not exist

    Preferred truecolor image functions, such as imagecreatetruecolor(), require GD2.

    By default, the extension php_gd2.dll was commented out in my php.ini, so i uncommented, restarted IIS and voila! the thumbnail images are now generating!

    Hope this helps someone!

    Everyone having issues with thumbnail pictures not appearing at the top, here’s a foolproof quick fix.

    Problem:
    In Magazeen Post Options you’ll notice your image uploads are going into wp-content/uploads/2009/03/nameoffile.jpg - but if you check that folder on your ftp it will still be empty. And the thumbnails are not showing up on your site.

    Solution:
    Manually upload your pictures to that folder. Make sure the file names match the nameoffile.jpg you uploaded under Magazeen Post Options.

    There you have it. Code Shmode.

    It truly is a wounderful theme. I just did a clean install wp 2.7.1 an activated your theme. I made one post with an image. It displays properly in the latest posts dock at the top. However I get the following error in firebug when mouse-over on the pictures in the dock:

    jQuery.easing[jQuery.easing.def] is not a function
    [Break on this error] return jQuery.easing[jQuery.easing.def](x, t, b, c, d);
    effects.core.js (line 348)

    It can be solved by excanging the easing functions to the old in the effects.core.js, but I guess thats not an option. I cant seem to find the calls on mouseover..

    1) WP-Admin screen (widgets area) - I added the magazeen widgets, and now my wp-admin screen just shows the sidebar, not the widget edit tools (actaul ‘edit’ or close buttons are gone). meaning i see the sidebar (show) in my wp-admin screen, and the following error at the very bottom. I can’t de-activate the widgets bc the buttons are gone.

    That said, I copied all of the PHP code from functions.php and threw it into Microsoft Word to see what was on line 107 and it’s either a blank line or an ending DIV tag. I say either, because depending on how you delete rows, it seems to change.

    Any suggestions?

    Great theme by the way! This is the only issue I’ve run into.

    @Steve, I’m not sure about this either, we didn’t build it with drop downs in mind. You could try asking the guys at xtorials.com what they did as they did a pretty good job of automating the image preview feature: http://www.xtorials.com/?p=194

    @Drew - Adverts can be handled very easily by enabling the widget in the settings.

    You need the latest Wordpress for it to work, but it should be easy to find in your wp-admin area. Good luck.

    I lurve this theme, but am not a web developer. I have poked around a bit trying to figure out why the featured news widget keep breaking (in IE the line 107 error shows up, in safari I see nothing). Basically, any time I try to select a new category for the featured news widget the widget breaks, and I am unable to remove it through the admin UI because instead of being a blue, clickable box the “featured news” widget just shows up as plain text. On the live site, nothing displays in the featured news and the categories widget below it is completely gone and the footer disappears as well. I read through the comments here and am completely lost as to what the answer is/was… any help would be fully appreciated! I know this was free, so I am not complaining :)

    1) I’d like to remove the border around sidebar widgets. Where is the php located for this and how would I go about changing it.
    2) If I wanted the header to use categories instead of pages for the menu options, is there a simple way to accomplish this or would it require lots of coding?

    Now i’m wondering if the image format can be edited. It’s alwas a square in my blog and i want to use landscapes as well. if i add an image the normal way i can also outline it whit the text but that seems unpossible with the magazeen way. Is there a solution for that?? In the theme demo it’s the same problem: wehen opening the image on the first post is landscape but when clicking on the latest posts bar it changes into a square

    1. In IE7, the main post image appears centred above the body text, whereas FF shows it correctly as right-floated around text.

    2. I have no plugins activated, yet still have the title rollover text-clash issue with the homepage top row of thumbnail titles.

    3. I have the ‘cache’and ‘wp-content/uploads’ folders set to 777, yet all uploaded images only ever reach the ‘wp-content/’ folder. Where in the php can I edit the path to reflect this?

    4. Was there ever, or will there ever be a readme.html? Pretty please?

    For the people who are having issues with other plugins interfering with the jQuery for the dock, you can edit the functions.js by adding in the following code to the very top:

    var $j = jQuery.noConflict();

    and then change all the “$” in the file to “$j”.

    I’m no coder, so I bumbled my way to this solution, but it seems to work for me.

    Did you find a solution to the FlickrRSS, Tag cloud etc. widget alignment problem? I have exactly the same issue with missing padding and content being aligned to left outside the sidebar. Plugins/widgets work just fine, but the styles are not quite right. I did some experimental CSS tweaking, but could not solve the problem yet. Any help is very much appreciated.

    For people who still having problems with Dock Thumbnails i found a solution…

    Instead of using “TimThumb.php” I use “imgsize.php” Mike Lopez script (http://tech.mikelopez.info/2006/03/02/php-image-resize-script/)

    Upload imgsize.php in the template directory (where “TimThumb.php” was)

    Then, modify the line codes in index.php, header.php to match with the new script syntax.

    FOR EXAMPLE… in “header.php” where you have:

    “<img src=”/timthumb.php?src=ID, “image_value”, true ); ?>&w=69&h=54&zc=1″ alt=”" />”

    you have to replace that with:

    “<img src=”/imgsize.php?w=69&h=54&img=ID, “image_value”, true ); ?>” alt=”" />”

    You don’t have create a folder with CHMOD 777, it’s not necessary (i didn’t do it and it work fine, by the way i don’t know where image are saved on the fly jejeee)

    Timthumb didn’t work for me, perhaps is the server, but i don’t know (using Spry.com). Actually i ‘m using timthumb in other website but with other hosting, WP WebHost.

    I follow @george dickson’s link (http://www.xtorials.com/?p=194) and in that link, the guy share his experience using Timthumb and the implementation of “smart image resizer” script instead. Also, this script didn’t work for me jejee, so i search another one, and finally “imgsize.php” Mike Lopez script” works great !

    Find the line 369 in functions.php and change:

    value=”‘.get_post_meta($post->ID, $meta_box['name'].’_value’, true).’”

    For:

    value=”http://www.yourdomain/whereyouuploadyourimages’.get_post_meta($post->ID, $meta_box['name'].’_value’, true).’”

    I’ve been testing this theme off and on for several weeks now — and I’m not making any progress. But, I’m not ready to give up because I love the work you put into it - and I really want to use it.

    GD Library, updated. CHMOD 777 (cache). De-activated plugins to rule out conflicts, using default images from the theme zip.

    I’ve searched several forums, up and down Smashing Mag, and can’t find the solution.

    The only issue I’m having at this point is the picture bar at the top. I’ve tried custom fields, just everything I can think of, to no avail =/ Nothing appears except for the dreaded blank box with the red “x” =(

    Thanks for this theme. I’ve been using this theme for over a week now, and I’m still undecided if I will stick with this. There are some things I really like about this theme. I also had some trouble getting the theme up, but if the answers can be found in the comments here.

    Like:
    1) unique look
    2) auto image thumbnails
    3) the widgets work well
    4) free

    Dislike:
    1) somewhat undecided about the look/color
    2) fickle about what other plug-ins and widgets you use
    3) only one page template
    4) no drop-down menu

    I used the theme as is and didn’t make any changes to it. Will probably do so and see what works. You can see the theme in action here: Life Without Limits

    Go to WIDGETS and put the MAGAZEEN Widgets in the Sidebar. You can control how many are viewable via that option.

    For me, that not only controlled the number of Posts in the Sidebar, but also in the main content.

    Also, double check Admin > General > Reading

    Add a Category named “Featured Article”

    – Then –

    Write a post.

    While you’re still in the post section, before you publish it.. look in the right column..

    Under Category, in the right column, put a check mark next to “Featured Article” ..

    Click “Publish” ..

    Done.

    I had the same problems that others with the header images. I tried everything and nothing worked.

    I have finally found a solution (perhaps unprofessional …) but it works!

    1. Open the file and edit timthumb.php
    2. Go to line 223 and just delete this:

    // use PECL fileinfo to determine mime type
    if( function_exists(’finfo_open’)) {
    $finfo = finfo_open(FILEINFO_MIME);
    $mime_type = finfo_file($finfo, $file);
    finfo_close($finfo);
    }

    3. Save the file and upload to the server

    Do not ask me why … but it worked.
    I hope that will work for anyone.

    I have not gotten any entries are displayed in the Featured News, but I keep trying!

    Make sure you go into Edit post, and define the URL of the image you want to show up in the Thumbnail. You should see a box to enter the URL in the options when you Edit / Create a post.
    Also you need to make sure that you enable the Magazeen widgets in the Widget area, don’t use plugin’s for featured news or recent posts.

    I’ve discovered the problem with my thumbnails not appearing at the top of the page but I don’t know how to fix it. When I upload an image they are getting uploaded to mysite.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/newwalkp.png
    But it seems to be looking for the file in mysite.com/blog/wp-content/themes/free-magazin-wordpress-theme/magazeen/cache
    How can I get it to look for the thumbnails in the right place or should I be doing something else different?

    Awesome template! I have installed it on twice and on both I have errors with the Featured Posts widget. On the test site, it displays fine, but will only allow me to choose 2 of 5 categories. On the one I am building from production, it will only allow me to choose one category (that I can’t change), but will not show any posts — although the read more link will click through.

    I have done some custom work on the theme, but I haven’t touched the functions. Any help you could offer would be awesome!

    Oh yes, and I have also noticed that the small post boxes in the production page do not align — likely something I did…

    You will need to have only one style of posts thoughout each page - it will only work if there’s one loop!

    About 3.0.x compatibility:

    I’ve used this theme for almost a year now, and the download link (above) has not been updated since WP 2.8 …….

    When I upgraded to WP 2.9, the theme still worked fine.

    When I upgraded to WP 3.0, *some* things did *not* work and I had to tweak a lot of code.

    This theme is *not* technically 3.0.x compatible. I hope wefunction updates it, but since it’s a year and half without an update, I’m thinking they might not do it.

    So, just be aware =)
